Without a Village

Crystal Gonzalez Callison

01/29/2026 - 02/06/2026

The Weight Room / Gallery B

Without A Village grew from questions about religion, spirituality, devotion, and worthiness in the face of repeated loss. Drawing from Catholic and LDS visual traditions, Casta paintings, and contemporary strategies of appropriation, Crystal replaces sacred and idealized figures with members of her own family and pieces of her domestic life. This helps her reframe devotion, spirituality, and family as something practiced quietly and imperfectly, shaped as much by loss, grief, and absence as by belief. Together, these works form an intimate record of life as it actually is now, after promises have failed, after homes have changed, and in the constant act of building meaning without a village.
